My old man made that mistake one year. He bought about £400 worth of fags thinking this was ok. We got stopped at customs   , had the cigs taken off us, (or we could have paid another £500 approx), names taken and noted. Then received a letter stating that if it happened again, a jail sentence wasn't out of the question!
Needless to say, it never has happened again!

did u get stopped leaving lanzarote or entering uk and did your husband have a receipt ?
we got stopped leaving lanzarote with the 12000 cigs i mentioned earlier in 2 holdalls,in another holdall we had vodka and they confiscated that but let us through with the cigs ,,,
lanzarote comes under spanish law so there shouldnt be any restrictions with it being in the eu ,,
does anyone know for definate ?

Lanzarote is governed by Spain but the islands pay a smaller rate of tax.

You are only allowed 200 cigs or the other recommended allowances that are stated.

Ask yourself this question, why can you buy cigs in the duty free when travelling to the Canaries but not if you are travelling to Spain.

Hi
We got stopped at Gatwick, and yes we did have a receipt. Unfortunately, the Canaries are not considered as being within the eu!!  For example, if you try to buy more than 200 from Gatwick duty free, and they see the destination from your boarding pass, you won't be allowed. The rules are quite clear on this (if you bother to check them out, and we hadn't). My husband had "assumed" otherwise, and as the saying goes, assume makes an ass of you and me!
