From 1st November this year using your Nationwide debit card abroad will cost you 2% + £1 a time if you use an ATM. On the plus side if you deposit at least £750 a month you will get free annual travel insurance and their charges for a failed DD/cheque drop from £30 a time to £15.

We use this - http://www.travelex.co.uk/uk/cash-passport.aspxYou can load it in advance at the advertised exchange rate on any given day, and just take out euros at any ATM free of charge. We've used it in both PDC and CT with no probs. Our son took one in New Zealand $'s when he went out there early this year and it worked well for him too.

It depends on the rate you get with that card, even paying the 2% the Nationwide card is still a good deal because you get the VISA rate, as long as you take enough out the ATM at a time to offset the £1 fee.

The Independent today
Nationwide is to increase the cost to customers of using their DEBIT cards abroad.
From 1 November the society will levy a 2 per cent charge on transactions as well as a £1 cash-withdrawal fee when the card is used overseas. This will replace the current 1 per cent currency-conversion charge levied at present.
Nationwide's CREDIT card holders though will be relieved that they will not face a similar increase in charges. The building society is to keep overseas usage charges at 1 per cent on purchases made outside the EU, and free within the EU.

At the moment they don't make any charge for using your DEBIT card in Europe, including the canaries. So, the 1 percent charge won't double because it doesn't exist. CREDIT cards will always attract a cash advance charge if you lift cash from either an ATM or from a bank. It's usually about 2%.

However, if you use a Nationwide current account as your main account, and have £750pm going into it each month, then you get FREE annual travel insurance. Its within Europe, but you can upgrade it to worldwide cover

It's hardly Free, given the charges And god knows where they get their insurance from because my annual multi trip worldwide insurance only costs £25 for good & comprehensive cover. Nationwide have shot themselves in the foot and I suspect lots of loyal customers will vote with their feet ! They could have just identified all the people who only used it for holiday cash and charged them the fees and not the rest...........simple really
