Hiya Garry, I buy River Cobbler from Asda/Tesco at home and its farmed and imported from Vietnam. Really good fish and half the price of the stuff which is caught and sold at home. I have looked into the farming and quality of the fish and it's prob. better than we get from the North Atlantic!!! I have been eating it 2/3 times a week for years and it's done me no harm. It's makes really good Tandoori or done on the barbie. Why Deiland and not Hipper Dino? What's the difference?

Ahh ,it is the Hipper dino at Deiland Jetaway , and yes i understand what you said ,itsjust when i go to Lanzarote i want to immerse myself into the culture ,language, and local food and wine, but suppose ,with increasing tourism demand for food and goods has to be imported more ,point taken

Isn't freshly frozen local caught fish a bit of a paradox?
Majority of frozen fish is going to have been caught elsewhere as much more easily transported frozen.
Whereas you can go to Ropers or the fish market in playa blanca and get beautifully fresh Dorada (Sea Bream) or Vieja caught that morning. And the fresh squid is sensational.
Actually if you are looking at frozen fish look out for Octopus from Galicia - and make your own pulpo tapas!

Ropers is a fab supermarket food only "chain" - think there are 3 of them - Playa Honda, Tias and Playa Blanca.
The playa Honda one is on the opposite side of the rode to Deiland in the light industrial area running parallel with the motor. You need to get off the motorway then go back underneath it at the Playa Honda zone industrial sign then negotiate a couple of roundabouts. If you search for Ropers on here I think there are more detailed directions.
It is a step up quality wise from the others - the veg in particular is excellent and can get all the fresh herbs too. There wine is a step up too if you are looking for a decent Albarino.
Dorada is best cooked in a salt case if you are brave enough to try that. Vieja is good grilled. Squid - I like to stir fry it with chorizo or pan fry it "a la plancha". They will clean and chop the squid for you.
I also like the way they joint their chicken wings so get yourself 20, make a nice marinade and fab on the barbie.

Hi Foodie, yea i,ll try and find that Ropers next time at Playa Honda,as it was i was limeted to what i could cook in my Don Paco apartment at Pocillos ,with there being just the statutary 2 ring hob and no microwave and oversized pans which meant you could only fit one on at a time anyway lol,,,,Anyway my kiddies fav thing is minced meat and mashed potato with loads of gravy ,but just one problem,i could not find bisto or simalar anywhere and the Spanish shop assistants didn t know what i was talking about{to come to think of it ,no suprise ,i ve never heard of gravy on any Spanish dish either},so ,first in the suitcase for next time , one big tub of gravy powder

Or, to eat some freshly caught fish, go up to the restaurants in Arrieta and Orzola.
