I'm visiting Lanzarote later this year and have been told I can drink the tap water. Is this true? I'll be staying at matagorda bay.

Yes. Slight taste difference, but no problem.

It might not kill you though there have been problems with the water in Yaiza and (I see today) Montana Roja this year. I don't know any locals that drink the water straight from the tap and many don't even use it for cooking. They've spent their whole lives here and if they don't drink it, then I'll go with their judgement.

Its absolutely fine to drink normally. THough most tourists don't - combination of hint of taste and easier to refrigerate bottles I guess.
Cook with it all the time.

We live in the Club Lanzarote area where a slightly raised level of Boron is reported. We stopped using bottled water years ago and exclusively used tap water run through a Tesco jug filter, with filter elements bought from a pound store, for the last seven months we've lived here and on holidays before. When filtered it does have a slight taste, but it's better than the water out of the taps in many places I've lived in UK.
The tap water here is desalinated sea water. It's bacteriologically pure, and normally harmless. The only reason some people have shied away is because, prior to filtering it does have an unusual taste, and there is a theory that the salts in it can upset your stomache. All I can say we have had no problems.
The reason that they have advised people not to drink it in one area of Playa Blanca until they fix the filter is because they do rigorously check its purity, and found that the Boron level was slightly above the EU standard. I imagine that the water in Matagorda is equally rigorously checked.
Bottom line is, the tap water won't harm you, but you might prefer the taste of bottled water (but not the price!)

No problem cooking with the water or indeed using it for 'brewing- up'. But the taste on it's own, from the tap, is, well, different !

It's not the tap water that worries me, its the pipes it comes through! Some are not in the best state! Anyway drink it at work after boiling without problem (so far!)

My granny still refuses to drink tap water today in England! If the locals don´t drink it from the tap, how come any Spanish bar will serve you a glass of tap water? The only time I´ve been refused that was an English bar that wanted to sell me a bottle.

Also, some properties have their water stored in an aljibe (water tank).
It is possible that an aljibe is not as clean as you would want for drinking water. Knowing the property and the water supply there would help make a decision, but, if in doubt, use bottled water. It is not as expensive in Lanzarote compared to the UK.
