We normally hire a car at the airport for the whole of our stay. This year we're staying in Matagorda, very close to airport, restaurants, beaches and so on, so thinking we don't actually need a car for the whole holiday. If we hire one for a few days in the middle of the holiday, just to give us some freedom to go out further afield, does it cost more (by proportion), do the car company bring it to the hotel, or if not where would we get one from? For comparison, for the fortnight starting 29th July I have come up with a Seat Ibiza (with AirCon!) for 274euros, from the airport. Hope to get a helpful reply from someone "in the know"!! Cheers,

Hope you don't mind me butting in on your questions, but I've never hired a car abroad before (or at home for that matter), do you need both parts of your UK driving licence to hire a car?

I've never been asked for the paper part, and we've hired in Lanzarote for the past 6 years, but usually take it just in case.

Cars for one day are more expensive, €25, then 2-4 days slightly less etc, then in slow increments. If you don´t need the car for much time try www.autospluscar.com they will deliver to your hotel, drop it at a different location etc at no extra cost. Worth a try.

Do take the paper part, but I read recently that, since only UK uses the paper part, other countries having the info embedded in the card, they don't know to ask.

I've hired for last 5 years and only ever need uk licence card. I've never even brought the paper part with me. I usually stay in the Matagorda area and usually hire for a week but have hired for 3 days a couple of times. As I'm on my hols, I have all the time in the world so I always get a quote from every car hire shop from Matagorda shopping centre way round to Pocillos beach shops as their prices change (in my experience). I usually get an astra or corsa for E120 for the week from Cabrera, and have had a 3-day corsa from them for about E70 and once even hired from Hertz and got citroen C3 for E65 (this was most definetly a once only bargain). I usually hire for the last week or last few days so I can leave the car at the airport. Not all rentals allow this, so check if you are shopping around. Good luck.

Thank you so much for your very helpful replies, both Cymmon and Zengs. Cabrera is one we've used before so that's looking good. We'd probably hire the car for some of our second week, just chill our round the pool for the first, can't wait!
Don't suppose you know roughly the cost of a taxi from the airport to Matagorda area do you? The place we're staying is almost walkable actually!! Close to Hotel Beatrix (not sure if that's how it's spelt!)
Thanks again, Kath.

Should be no more than €10. It should be about €8.
Enjoy

The cheapest I had was E8 last Feb when I arrived at lunchtime. However, I had a late arrival a year or so ago, got to apt about 11pm and it cost E12. but that's really the most, rought E10'ish. They really should put a wee gate at the far end of the airport for Matagordees to walk to their apts', lol.

Yes, I know what you mean Zengs - we frequently wander along the beachside path to the end of the runway to watch the planes (thank God we weren't there that day last year when one overshot the runway or you might have actually seen me run for the first time in many years!!).
Just thinking, as I listen to the rain lashing at the windows, two weeks tonight we'll be enjoying an outdoor supper, probably at a favourite restaurant, watching the sun go down over the sea, without the need for a fleece or anything. Seems like a world away - but counting down the hours now ...
Thanks for all help offered, Kath
