so hi
i just booked myself a car at one of the rentals, and i was just wondering
their renting policy is not renting a car out to anyone under 30
which, naturally, i told them i am (thirty, that is)
although i am, in fact, six years younger
so the question is - do i stand a chance of showing up to the pick-up place and talking them into giveing me the car anyways (maybe with an extra payment or stuff)?
has anyone done anything in this manner?

p.s. no i am not unreasonably evil, it just was the only rental that wasn't overbooked for the next month or so for the car i need

No brainer I'm afraid, just forget it.
It's probably a condition of their operating licence but will definitely be a condition of your insurance so even if they didn't notice (and they've have to be a bit dumb, DOB is on your licence and passport) any insurance you thought you'd have would be invalidated.

Cancel the booking and try some different hire companys - www.doyouspain.com limit is 21 but there may be others as well.

Cheers - Ole

http://www.doyouspain.com quotes a price of 300euros for one day
might be some kind of mistake, because all the other rentals have the same car for around 60-65 euros
thanks for the tip anyway, i'll try them

Ermmmmmmmm :?:

Thing you must have accidentally selectted a Merc or something. Just priced up a Ford Ka, 17-24 June 89 Euros.
Sounds a good deal.

Yeah not the greatest idea giving a false age! In the unlikely event they don't spot it on your licence if you have a prang, or god forbid accidentally hit someone injury death etc you will get the book thrown at you and have a substantial bill to boot so not really worth the effort.

On top of Ole's holidayautos and autoreisen shouldn't be a prob.

A tinny little Citroen C1 which is the normal budget car I get won't be much more than 80-100E for a week very tops I would have thought.

No point upgrading from the basic as chances are you may get a better car anyway plus they seem to replace the cheaper cars more often so likely to get a newer one that way.

We always get the cheapest available also, just doesn’t seem worth the extra expense to upgrade to something a little better and as soon as you go for anything the slightest bit nice/different the prices go daft in comparison.
e.g. a sample of cars for a given week (although in this case it would seem worth whilst upgrading C2 to C3) :

Citroen C2 €94
Citroen C3 €96
Seat Ibiza €118
Citroen C3 Auto €187
Megane cabriolet €226
Jeep Wrangler €317

And another company :
Ka – 3d A/C €89
Focus - 3d A/C €217
Merc CLK320 €859

Mavi,

Those prices are per week.

Try www.autoreisen.es or www.doyouspain.com - or there's loads of others.

thanks :)

I don't have a credit card so hopefully I find one who accept that.

Overall renting a car seems to be very cheap!

What worries and confuses me is that a good few rental companies i tried were willing to let me rent a car despite saying in there conditions that you had to be 21/25. I said I was 20 and they said its ok. I didn't bother as it happens, just incase.. but why are they willing to go against their own terms?

THey seem to have a completely different attitude to car hire over there.

They won't even bother looking at the car where as in the UK you have to check that every scratch is recorded prior to driving off otherwise they will charge you.

When I used ANTHON (who were brilliant but not sure about their insurance) I simply left the car back at the airport in a prescribed car parking slot and with the keys under the mat. mostly there wasn't even anyone there to check it.
Autoreisen do give the car the once over when you return though.

I'm very surprised about them allowing an under age driver though ?? I can understand why they might want to have a limit, but not why they'd waive it, unless they know it just invalidates the drivers insurance in which case that’s severely bad practice.

:D Ermmm excuse me for butting in.

I'm on my lovely hols there in a couple of weeks, you'll spot me, I've got that lovely British tan, ie white with a hint of blue.

I'm wanting to hire a car and have an old licence without the photo, is this ok if I show my passport with it? And is it better to hire on line or pop into one of their shops when i get there? I used to live there so just nipped into a shop but that was at a time long long long ago.... before internet.

Thanks

You will be fine with the old paper licence + passport. I would do BY PHONE if I were you (if you have Skype of some cheap means to call from UK). It gives you the chance to haggle :)

Try PlusCars. I used Autoreisen many times when coming on holiday and found them to be cheapest - but the cars are sometimes a bit the worse for wear AND noe that I am living here I have found Pluscars (they change their cars at 6 months) to often be even cheaper!

Try Natasha at Playa Blanca office +34 928 349276. Make it clear you want the best price (and you want to collect from airport - if you do)

Just like in The Life of Brian - you MUST haggle tho :D
