just got back from lanza on the 28th of sept, just to let anyone going to the island from now on, be careful with your luggage if it is over your allowance ie:15kgs/20kgs they will charge you 12 euros per kilo for every kilo you are over it cost me 72 euros on saturday for the privilage, and they are very strict !!!. be warned !!

Ahhh, very good advice. They've always been pretty chilled about excess as far as we were concerned, but now they're jumping on the 'screw the punters' bandwagon. Well I'm going to buy one of those small luggage weigh scales. I saw them in Clarks shoe shop for about £6. This'll hopefully keep me right and save a fortune.

What airline did you fly with Vanman?

i flew with Thomas Cook, but i don't think it matters what airline you fly with as its spanish staff that check you in at Arreccife airport.

to be fair mate, if you try to travel with 6kgs of excess luggage, you should expect to be charged.

We flew only a few weeks ago and both my girlfriends parents were over, but by a maximum of 2kgs, and they werent charged.



That said, I booked a flight to Dominican Republic with Thomas Cook and wasnt made aware that we only had 15kgs each. Try packing for 2 weeks with 15kgs.

What on earth were you taking that put you so over weight? Ski boots?! Tins of baked beans? Encylopedias? The kitchen sink?

Did someone tell you to pack lots of jumpers for Lanzarotes freezing climate?!

In answer to your replies foodie/stevepud when we went out we were on our limit, all we brought back were 1 bottle of spirits, some ciggies (2 cartons) and a few bits and pieces so were we got 6 kilos of overweight i wish i new !!, maybe it was the four jars of face cream the wife bought . having said that 30 kilos is not a lot of weight for two people especially when one is female .

But why didn't you carry it on as hand luggage?

1 bottle of spirits will only weigh one kilo so thats a lot of bits and pieces!

haha, I alwys take more than my girlfriend! I guess blokes clothes just weight more than girlies... (not suprising really)

15kgs each isnt much, specially when the empty case is probably 4kgs.

I guess next time you fly with a 15kg allowance, you'll pre book an extra 5 for the return journey - much cheaper that way.


I have long thought luggage was a rip off.
I personally weigh 85kgs, but my girlfriend a lot less. We both get 20kgs luggage, but I weigh the plane down more, but we both pay the same, Fair??

If a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 kids, a 4 and a 6 year old) fly, their combined weight with their full allowance will be approx 290kgs (people80+50+20+20, cases20+20+20+20, hand10+10+10+10, yet a group of 4 rugby players travelling will be approx 600kgs (120x4, 30x4). utterly ridiculous.


Also, wouldnt it make sense for the airlines to give you a slightly larger allowance for the return leg, they all know we're going to being stuff back, and now that you cannot carry booze bought inland in your hand luggage they SHOULD increase the hold luggage to accommodate that.

See I have never taken more than 15kg ever except one occaision when I stupidly packed a ton of books in my bag. Normally average out at between 10 and 12kg and still don't wear half the stuff I take.

And its not as though its complicated enough with different airlines having different limits to then have different limits for out bound V return!

Comes down to money - every extra kilo carried costs the airline in fuel costs - you'll notice that they are all struggling so need every penny.

I was with a diver friend of mine seeing them off at the airport at check in, when she put her bag on the scales it said 19.5kg, the check in girl then moved the bag and it went to 21kg and yes she got charged for a kilo, even after i brought to the attention of the check in that if i moved the bag around the weight would change and did this to prove a point it went from 21 to 18 on diffrent parts of the scales.

Another incident happend with me, when i was informend i was 4 kg overweight, now im a tight bugger and i check my bags before i leave home and i knew i was ok as i have done many times before, so i asked when their scales were last tested etc etc and asked to weigh them on the next set of scales at the check in, they refused and dropped the charges..... the mind boggles.

They do seem to be much keener on the weight of luggage at Lanz.

Is there a reason for this ?

3 years ago we experiened a charge for luggage being overweight. It cost me €50. It would seem all the airlines are doing this now. IMHO just another way to screw the passengers and make money for the airline companies. First Choice/ JWT Thomson/Thomas Cook all apply this charge now.

When we queried this we were told it was to do with fuel and weight and that companies based holiday package/ flight pricing based on 20k luggage per person. Apparently the aeroplane uses more fuel the heavier it gets. !!!!!!!!. I see now that companies usually only allow 15K in their prices and charge for the extra 5k at the time of booking.

I'm surprised they dont charge extra on the return part of the flight given that some people (myself included) gain an extra pound or two on holiday.

Be careful with what you might think as hand luggage being separate. I returned from Lanza to Glasgow with Globespan 6th September and the ground staff made passsengers place all luggage including hats and hand bags (the latter did not apply to me) etc on the scales with the option to either pay excess or bin anything you did not want to take. Some people took the option of deciding to wear as many clothes as possible, which was quite funny, especiallay in the 25deg heat. It just makes a mockery of the whole thing , you can wear it but you cant put it in your bags. Next thing will be to weigh each person with their luggage to set a limit. After the good food and drink I would be Scr*wed.

Foodie, yes of course extra weight costs more to fly but the extra charges are far and away disproportionate to the extra fuel surcharge – and if they’re so bloody bothered why then can you but duty free at the airport and take it on board without it being checked/weighed AND why does the plane then carry tosh duty free items AND bottles on board AND fags AND why not allow hold / hand luggage allowance to be aggregated AND why are there no scales at the airport for you to check and readjust before you run the gauntlet at checkin - because all that is irellevant they just want more money.
Yes there is an added cost that it’s fair for them to try to recoup but basically it’s a rip off way of screwing you out of a few more quid as can be seen by the dodgy the way they send you away to pay your extra baggage whilst your bags go through.
