:( I absolutely love lanzarote and have been numerous times. Last year i was staying in a beautiful villa in puerto del carmen and my holiday was spoilled by cock roaches. My teenage daughter woke up with one crawling on her arm. They were absolutely everywhere Did anyone else have problems last year as i have booked to go back to a different villa this year and my daughter is absolutely terrified might need to cancel its that bad :?

The day after we moved over - we saw 3 in our apartment... and I found the legs of one in my bed. Not the best of welcomes to Lanzarote - I can tell you. I freaked out completely as you can imagine! That was in apartments at the top of Cardiac Hill in central Carmen.

Since then, I've never seen another one in Puerto del Carmen - and have only seen 3 in Playa Blanca - and that's coming up for two years now. So don't worry - and tell your daughter she was very unlucky to have one at such close quarters. Normally they'd rather stay away from humans.

As in any warm country cockroaches are here, and in most parts of the island, but more particularly where there is a ready source of food - resort areas. Lift up an drain cover in any of the resorts and you'll see them.
Most supermarkets sell very effective products which you can spray on all the thresholds and in all the corners and cubby holds of your place. Most recommend spraying once a year, but we do it every six months (we use Zum) and we hardly ever see them. The products kill any roaches and eggs already in the house, but also leave a residual covering on the thresholds which either puts them off coming in, or kills them as they try to enter.

Mike - prevention is obviously better than a cure. I'm guessing that's fine to use around animals? No problems with your two dogs?

And is Zum readily available in the supermarkets here? We've used sprays - but I thought they would just wash away whenever we mopped the floors. Hoping this one doesn't?

It works! Big orange can with a fearsome trigger! We do the whole house and then take the dogs out for a long walk afterwards. Never any ill effects although the house stinks for a couple of days. It says on the can safe for pets once dry, which takes an hour or so.

Last yr did seem to be particularly bad, first time I had seen a number in the street etc but like the above post says "Zum" is the way forward. At the end of the day you go to Lanza for dry sunny climate... Exactly what these buggers like so it is par of the course really!!!!!!

Thanks to everyone that commented on the wee pests if anyone has anymore
suggestions please add coments. I have been to Lanzarote numerous times
and have never experienced the pests before. As i say it was really bad we pulled
the washing machine out in the back court of the villa and it was totally infested
with the pests and the eggs were everywere. The owner of the villa was totally
shocked when i sent the pictures. OUTSIDE i can cope INSIDE a no no Love Lanzarote
Hate the Pests my Daughter Terrified

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Don't whack them over the head with a shoe, or stand on them. Any eggs the roach is carrying attach to your shoe and then you bring them into the house to hatch.
