Going to Costa Calero Hotel in Puerto Calero. Any info appreciated. Anyone know if there is mini golf there?

Hi

If you mean Iberostar Calero, we've been there four times. There is no mini golf, but there are five pools, one childrens, one salt water, one fresh, one shallow for adults and children in the cafe area downstairs and one attached to the spa. The spa is very nice, and I can thoroughly recommend the massages. There is large chess, boules and volleyball, organised watercise etc if you want it. Look on Iberostar's website to take a video tour around the hotel. It's set in stunning gardens with little niches for privacy, never have to bag loungers or parasols. There is a small childrens playground and apparently they are introducing creche and babysitting facilities if you need that sort of thing. To be honest, it wasn't previously particularly a child friendly hotel, which is one of things that appealed to us  , but this seems to be changing. Food in previous years has been consistently high quality; this year in April we were disappointed. However, more recent reviews (see Tripadvisor.com) show that they have again pulled their socks up, and also the all-inclusive package has improved. People who work there are consistently friendly, efficient and welcoming. If you go in with the right attitude and smile at them, you'll get a smile straight back
The walk down to the Marina is short but sharp with a selection of shops, bars and restaurants. Take some bread from breakfast and feed the fish, loads of biggies! Also, the whale and dolphin museum on the left hand side going down to the harbour is well worth a visit; we found it fascinating.
It is very quiet in Calero, but you can catch a complimentary bus from the hotel to PDC, or, as we did, hire a car and explore the island. There is so much to see. If you're feeling energetic, walk to Playa Quemada along the cliff, and take in a much deserved beer at the Playa Quemada restaurant on the rocky seafront. Great for sitting back and chilling. Their garlic prawns and garlic bread (with tomato on top) make a lovely snack to accompany the beer too! :D
Anything else you feel I haven't covered, just send me a question(s), and I'll do my best to answer it/them.
Hope you have a wonderful time at one of my favourite hotels. :D :D

Hi Anne, Do you recommend any particular floor to stay on, as reviews on tripadvisor say you can e-mail and request rooms, we are 2 adults and 14yr old son. Thanks. :D

Hi

Well, it depends what you want. Right down on ground floor, you are fairly near the pools and it's cooler there in the daytime. If you would like to be nearer the pools, then it's the first floor. You get a nice piece of lawn in front and chairs to sit in the porch. Drawback is that it's hotter at night than higher levels, and the mozzies do seem to lurk in the undergrowth. The third floor means that on entering the reception area, you don't have any stairs to climb or lifts to wait for, as you're on the same level. We went on the 5th floor this time in April and we were very glad. Initially, there was a three day heatwave, and the higher you went the cooler it was at night. Not so many mozzies either - perhaps they get altitude sickness  Also, you get a more panoramic view the higher you go. Incidentally, a word of warning if you're on the above ground levels with a balcony - don't close the french windows behind you or you'll be stuck on the balcony!! We did this one year and had to shout to this nice German couple to ask them to tell reception and then wait for the maintenance guy to let us back in
Anyway, hope this is a help.

Thanks very much, think I will request a floor on 5th floor as I am one of those people mozzies find delicious even with repellent on  and thanks for the tip about the doors as I would most certainly have locked myself out :D

Dont go to Playa Quemada. Its rubbish. Its too glossy, too many people and too expensive!

Oh alright then, I admit it, I am just trying not to let it get too popular

Its my local bit of seafront and not many holidaymakers go there - thank goodness - and as yet its unspoilt (if a bit scruffy with the various tents and caravans that seem to get away with staying there).

The beach is black sand hence the name (Playa Quemada means Burnt Beach) but the views are stunning and the two restaurants both good. My preference is the 7 Islas (just up from the little car park area) Its run by Jose and his wife. Lovely guy, good food and very accommodating.

Just dont tell everyone!

I would have to agree that Playa Q is a dump Arby!
The area and bars are very nice.
Lets hope it stays and grows slowly without being overrun!

Good idea to take a mozzie machine and some good repellent. I bought some ex-army issue from eBay advertised on the package holiday page and it worked a treat. A lot of people on other forums are strongly recommending Avon's Skin So Soft (also advertised on the same place); I can't comment as I haven't tried it. Using the machine before we went out at night and topping up the repellent on our bodies at night, we were able to leave the french windows ajar rather than use the air-conditioning. Hope you get the fifth floor anyway. :D
