During my visit last week I took a (long!) walk to have a look at this hotel. It seems to have been abandoned after the main structure was built although it looks like some squatters may have made a home in some of the bedroom shells. It has no access roads and is situated on a very rocky coastline.

Can anyone tell me the story behind it?

The structure was there when I first visited the island in 1979. And it looked pretty much the same as now.....

The story goes that this was a hotel built by two German partners, - most likely in the late 60ies or early 70ies. According to my sources, the hotel was completed and in operation when one of the partners took off with all the money and left his mate in big problems. Both then left the island with the building abandoned.

Shortly after the building had been completely stripped for anything that could be used. The story goes that bathtubs and washbasins from the hotel are still in use by locals on the island....

Other sources claim the hotel was built without the proper permits and was abandoned when the proper permits were not granted.......

Right now the structure serves as free lodging to backpackers and drugadicts, - some of whom is said to have stayed on for several years....

And I dont blame them. The view is magnificant out there and piece and quiet is unmatched on the island.....

Interestingly enough, my Spanish friends seem to have different versions of what happenend, - so I have had a hard time getting the real facts.....

All that I know is hearsay as well, but to add to the above post...

It's colloquially known as the Hotel de Los Charcones and apparently the ruin is still standing because nobody wants to pay the costs associated with pulling it down - quoted a few years back as being 200,000,000 pesetas (1.2m Euros).

This is more to the true facts I think. Certainly doesn't look as if it or the surrounds were ever completed to me. My understanding is that The German Association of Master Butchers used to have their annual convention in Lanzarote, so decided to build their own hotel to have it in every year. They got so far with building it before the authorities stopped the build as it was illegal and told them they'd have to pay a fine of so many million pesetas before allowing it to proceed. They decided not to pay the fine - or couldn't afford to - and abandoned it.
