I wondered wether this was a commen ocurence ,apparently on approach on 9th dec 2010,we had to divert because of an unusual strong south westerly wind which was causing crosswind problems for planes landing,.in which the pilot said we would have to land at "Las Palmas",which left me confused seeing that Fueteventura was just down the road,until later told Fueteventura was full of planes already that had been diverted and couldn t cope with anymore,hence no chance of a slot later and spent the night at Gran Canaria

it's only been a problem this year,apparently the winds have changed direction,we normally have northly winds but climate change this year has given us warm strong south winds,( had a couple of tropical storms too !) i suppose the pilots arent used to it and also have to approach from a different direction and maybe the runway isnt long enough this way? lots of reasons there! but two centre holiday for you !! lol

Being a Plane "geek" i loved the diversion and extra landing ,take off and extra plane spotting,{note "geek" not "anarack" lol}, .Anyway after 3 hours ,the whole plane load of coughing ,spluttering,bugdet ,working class,East Midlanders were transported to the most poshest 5 star Hotel in Masapalomes,the reception was like a temple,the buffet fit for royalty,the hotel inhabitants and guests must of thought whats the cat dragged in now :)

There was a previous thread that stated that low visibility combined with wind direction stopped flights from landing from over the mountains. Like you said, most flights went to Fuerteventura until this was full then diversions to other Islands occured.
