Hi,
I have booked to come to CT in early October for 10 days and wondered if you could give me some advice. It is my first time in Lanzarote, I am female and will be staying alone for most or all of my holiday (a friend may come for a few days), I want a chilled out relaxing holiday and will be wanting to eat out in nice restaurants most evenings, I will also want to go for a few drinks in friendly bars where people will chat rather than stare at me for being alone (I found Los Cristanos very lonely cause of the odd looks I got for being alone) - don 't get me wrong, I'm not looking to join in on other peoples holiday, but I like to chat to people at the bar. So any advice & do's & don't would be great. I am early 30's so don't want clubby bars but like music and entertainment.
Thanks in advance Sammi

Is it just me or is it such a great idea to not only post on an internet forum that your staying alone but also showing details of where your staying and roughly when I'd seriously think about amending one or both.

Fear yee NOT sammi. Lanzarote is definately NOT the type of place where anyone gets stared at for being on their own. This could get quite lengthy, but please read on. Three years ago, I did, and thought exactly the same as you are doing right now . I booked a holiday to Lanzarote on my own, and funnily enough it was in October as well !! hmmmm,,, ha ha ha... October is actually a lovely month sammi. I'm gonna try and get a week over there myself in Oct. Anyhow. Everything was great, until I actually arrived at my apartment. Thats when the doubt and uncertainty really kicked in; "ohh what have I done. I don't know the place or anyone here" thinks me. I have written this before sammi. If I could have got a plane back to the UK within the hour, I would have come home. I'm just so so glad I didn't. Lanzarote, and to me, whats most important, the people of Lanzarote are among the friendliest I have ever come across in my life. OK, so I'm male. Believe me sammi, it doesn't matter wether your; male, female, gay, straight, married, single or come from the moon for that matter, Lanza will "genuinly" welcome you with open arms. As I said, I did it three years ago, and have never been anywhere else since. 3 or 4 times a year, and always on my own. I love it. I have so many friends over there now, it feels more like home, than home in the UK. Another thing that no one ever bothers about in Lanza is age. I have friends, both male and female in Lanza of wide and varying agegroups. When I'm over, we go for meals, a drink, or when they're not working some of them come and spend the afternoon on the beach with me just for a natter for an hour or two. And I try to have a nice quiet holiday on my own !!! Some hope,,, ha ha ha. Honest sammi its brilliant, and it broadens your horizons so much its unreal. I have friends that now live in Lanza from all over the world; Argentina, Holland, the Phillipines, Romania, Denmark and of course people from the UK. its that type of place sammi, a good mix of people from all walks of life All ya gotta do is say "hello", its as simple as that. Don't be frightened kiddo, you have no need to be. Just a little self confidence is all that is required, you'll be fine, and surprised at how brave you "DON'T" have to be. I always stay in Puerto Del Carmen, so personally I can't speak about CT, but in all honesty, I think the people will be the same; friendly & welcoming, no probs. Only one little word of advice sammi. STAY OUT of the electrical / jewelry shops, they're just a rip off, no matter how good the bargain may seem in the window, give em a wide berth. When ya get there, there are a few of rules of course............ Rule 1, Relax. Rule 2, Enjoy yerself. Rule 3, Meet the people, and rule number 4,,,,,,,,, Take plenty of suncream, coz it will be HOT HOT HOT.Have a great time Mick

Youll be fine Sammi your initial post shows what an honest genuine person you are, people are great in Lanzarote and Mick has excellently outlined the advantages of The 'Hello word', make conversation and people will respond to you. Lanzarote is a nice place but I would still say mix in crowds and be aware of the too familiar kind if you get my meaning Have a great Holiday and I for one look forward to your feedback on this post when you get back, Oh and pay a visit to Puerto Del Carmen, go in Jaspers and Spenders they will put you right on where to have a great time

Good shout Geoff, re: Jaspars & Spenders. sammi, if per chance you do get down to Puerto Del Carmen at some point in your holiday, these are two bars that are definately worth noting. The people that own these bars have lived & worked in Lanza for quite a number of years, and certainly have all the "up to date" info that at some point you may require. That coupled with the fact that the owners (Sue at Jaspars & John at Spenders) are VERY English, and more than hospitable. Jaspars is at the Arrecife end of the Strip in PDC. Look for the Hawwian bar on the "beach side" of the road, and Jaspars is directly opposite, above Banca March. You will see I say "above" Banca March sammi. Reason being, the bars in PDC are sometimes built on 2 levels. Its a bit strange when ya first see it, but ya get used to it after a while. Ask for Sue... Spenders is a small bar, just off the Strip in PDC up a street named Calle Anzuelo. If your on foot, dependent on which way you approach it, look for either; Mulligans bar, which is just past Centro Atlantico (Centro is where the younger generation make to of an evening) or, if you see Supermakado Dos Mil 2, Calle Anzuelo is the street at the side. Spenders is up the hill, about 100 yards on yer left. Ask for John, Steve or Natallie. They're great people that run these bars sammi, and always happy to help. If you get a little further up the Strip, call into Ruta66 in the afternoon and say hello to Lilley & Flo from me. Ruta is quite a large open fronted bar next to Tropical, Lilley & Flo run the place in the daytime until about 7pm. I usually call in to see em, and have a couple of glasses of vino and a natter for an hour when I've done mi sunbathin bit on the beach !! Lilley is from Romania, and Flo is from Wales, but they're two friends that I see every time I'm over. Just a bit of female company if ya feel the need sammi..... As I say, just say "hello" tell em ya know me !! Even though ya don't, it doesn't matter.... we're all friends in Lanza !! Have a great time Mick

Hi Sammi, You will have a very relaxing time in Costa Teguise and there are many friendly bars in the resort and it is more difficult to find a bad meal than to find a good one. If you want to pm me i will give you directions to our bar where you always receive a warm welcome and we spend time with everyone who wants a chat! meatloaf will let you know what we are like but i would prefer other people to sing our praises rather than singing our own - we've not been here long enough to do that!! We'll also point you in the right direction for good restaurants that have been recommended by our customers.
