Someone doesn't get basic economics. The value of wine in a bottle costing 3E is about 30 cents. The rest is tax and the huge overheads. Thats why once you pay over 5E the quality of wine increases exponentially.
Like zante Lanza makes wine too you can pay 15E easily - why should it cost less because it is made locally? They would murder their margins doing that.
Bread - well the cheapest and best bread are the freshly baked little rolls. Do as the locals do and buy them fresh daily.
Obviously don't buy UK brands as they have been imported specially for tourists.
Overall cost of shopping is the same or slightly less than UK depending on exchange rate.

foodie wrote: Thats why once you pay over 5E the quality of wine increases exponentially. true but it depends where you live. A bottle of a good Spanish rioja in mainland Spain is maybe €3, exactly the same bottle on Lanzarote would then be €6 and in UK sell at 9 pounds. The mark up on Spanish wines in Hiperdino is much higher than in the same supermarket chain in mainland Spain (called Supersol here). When I come over to Lanzarote by ferry from Spain, I bring crates of wine! The Spanish government heavily subsidises food imports to try to equalise the cost of living on the islands with the mainland more) but wine is much more expensive supposedly to protect the local vineyards who can´t produce as cheaply in bulk, but I suspect more because the tourist market will pay more.

Lis, I think you are right, I think wines are expensive here. However, what is true is that the La Geria grapes, being grown on individual vines one to a Zoco are very labour intensive to harvest, and this adds to the cost.
What about spirits and beer? In Hiperdino, a litre of 47% Gordons is about 11.50, and a 33CL can of Supersol Lager is 38 cents. What are they on the Peninsula?

Not forgetting the kg/hectare of grapes grown which will be a fraction of what they get on the mainland.
But then the cheapness of beer and spirits makes up for it a little....

I took to drinking large pacharáns (like a weak sloe gin with ice ...yum...), like Zoco, this summer in Lanzarote and when I got home to Spain it was the same price here in Supersol. I don´t buy Gordons etc. in Spain...Gibraltar is only an hour away so I go there where it is about 8 pounds a litre ( and cigs 14 pounds for 200...)! It´s just the wine that is a horrendous price in Lanzarote unless you buy it from a cash and carry.

I remember when we first went to Lanzarote, about 20 years ago, there used to be an old pick up truck with a barrell on the back that used to park at the bus stop next to the fariones hotel and you could take an empty bottle and get it filled up from the barrell for only a few pesetas.

Was this the old bloke who also sold his fresh fruit and veg too? I used his services a few times, and the wine was very good for the price.
