After the theft incident I mentioned on here last month we have just had a letter from the Servicio Canario De La Salud and it's all in Spanish and we don't know what to do!!
Basically as a result of an attack and theft my other half had his grazed knee cleaned up at a local out of hours clinic near PDC at the behest of the Guardia Civil. This letter relates to that and I think it requests E111 and a copy of his passport and insurance docs but I am really concerned as I have no idea what to do with them and don't really know what they want! We don't speak Spanish nor know anyone who does. We have travel insurance but no medical insurance. I hope to god this is not going to cost us money, the translator at the Police station said it wouldn't. Can anyone help????? If anyone knows the Canarian medical system or criminal justice system.. I really don't know how to sort this out or where to start! They seem to want the docs now and handing in to them as there no contact details other than a fax no.

Thanks,

Nicola

Hi,

The best thing i can suggest is contact Guy Buske at AZ of paperwork and he will help you. It may cost you a few euros but at least it will settle it the problem.

We had a similar situation last year when we both had to have minor medical treatment then discovered one of our "EHIC" Cards ("E111"'s) was out of date. We also had a bit of a panic as my Spanish was not good enough to deal with it confidently but we contacted our Holiday Insurance company and they were very helpful. To cut a long story short, we ended up renewing the EHIC in question, then emailing the new details and a scanned copy of it to our insurers who then forwarded it to the Health Authority. I'd therefore recommend you contact your insurers and explain the situation to them as the first step.

Nicola, are you still in PDC, or are you back in UK? Was it the local state medical centre the Centro de Salud you wen to or a private clinic? is it possible to take a photo of the letter and attach it on here like Locozoco does with his landscapes? Someone may then be able to translate it for you.

Thanks for the advice so far guys, I will phone the insurance company today and see how to proceed. I really don't fancy having to pay an excess for the sake of some iodine on a cotton wool ball tho lol!!
The thing that annoys me is I took EHIC cards, passports and insurance booklets along with me and noone was interested in looking at them!
Walker - we have been home for a month now. I have no idea where we went, the Guardia Civil took us at 5.30am and we felt no need to be seen but as it was going to be heard in court they said it was necessary. It was like an out of hours clinic I think but it was dark and I have no idea where we were driven to.

Well they can't do much if you are in UK, although they seem to have your address. What about my idea of posting a photo of the letter here - you could blank out any private bits first.

Was it the Hospiten they took you to? That is a place what seems to be in the middle of nowhere when late at night on the outskirts of Carmen.

I agree that contacting Guy is the best option, he is incredibly helpful and on the occasions we have used him to help with paperwork has charged very little. He has always said that to call him cost nothing (apart from the phone call bit!!) and he never says he can help when he can't. He has very good links with the police here and is a whizz at the paperwork. My guess is they only want the details to claim the fees back from the Spanish authorities for the treatment of a tourist but I'm sure Guys guess would be much better than mine. Really hope you get it sorted.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Sapphire1, I have emailed and asked for help!
We have been home for a month now and assumed all was over and done with. It's annoying that this could not have been sorted out there and then.
Overhere - I have no idea where we were, it was a built up area and a local family came in with a poorly child at about 6am and this is what made me think it was an out of hours type place.
I just hope we don't have to pay!

I imagine it's the EHIC card they want a copy of plus a copy of your passport.

As there is a fax number they will want you to fax the details to them.

Is there a ref number on the letter you received? if so when you fax the copies make sure that and your name are on the fax. It is to probably claim back from the health authority.

In the letter can you see anywhere it says an amount in euros normally written then in figures, if not then I doubt you have anything to worry about in regards of cost. Had it been Hospiten then that would have been a different matter.

Best of luck.

Just fax them a copy of your passport and up to date EHIC. It´s only so that they can claim back the cost of your treatment from the UK as a tourist. The Servicio Canario De La Salud is the local NHS.
No need to spend money on a translator.

I hope i can put your mind at rest. Two years ago (Oct 2009) my wife became very ill on hols in mainland Spain. She was taken to and admitted to a Spanish National Health hospital and the only thing we had to provide was pasport details and the EHIC card. We did not have to pay anything. On the other hand we have friends who had a similar problem, but they wre taken to a private clinic, who demanded immediate payment and even had a cash macine in the reception for that purpose.
We obviously had to use our insurance for everything else, as our stay had to be extended, until we were given the all clear to fly home.
The EHIC is a European central fund, but beware, as i'm sure this will only apply if you are in a NH hospital and not a private clinic.
