Walker wrote: Chris, I'm sure €3500 per cubic foot is a misprint. One of our quotes a year ago was
30 cubic metres (1080 cubic ft) £3,800.00 and 35 cubic metres (1260 cubic ft) £4,300.00
So perhaps they said €3500 for 1000 cubic feet? Sorry, it is €350 per cubic metre. I really shouldn't be let out alone these days

Hmm, that still sounds steep in comparison with the quotes I got last year for C&K, TC etc - about three times as much. Perhaps it depends on how much you are bringing, is it only a small amount?

Walker wrote: Hmm, that still sounds steep I did the calculations on what you paid and yes it does sound steep in comparison. I contacted C&K plus a few others to get some more quotes. It will be interesting see how they all compare? I'm bringing a few select bits of furniture but nothing bulky i.e sofas, beds etc, and a small amount of electrical equipment amongst the usual personal items. If I gather any info that may be useful to others I will post on here. Many thanks

These were the quotes I received from C and K a month ago:
"Prices are calculated on the cubic metre, the more metres transported the cheaper the price per metre. You can of course transport the exact amount of metres you require. Accordingly our current charges for the transportation of personal effects from Milton Keynes.
10 metres £2,200.00 or £220.00 per cubic metre 15 metres £2,580.00 or £172.00 per cubic metre over 15 metres"
With regard to import tax:
"There is import duty payable on all goods, even second hand personal effects. However, the duty is based on the "declared commercial value" which on second hand goods is very low. Dependant on the size of the consignment and once we see a list of the goods we can advise accordingly. With C and K you would know in advance exactly what the local charges would be. " Seems reasonable enough to me and they have been recommended as providing a good service, any thoughts?

I didn't go with C&K, but, although they are the dearest, I think I would if I were doing it again. Moving 1600 miles is a huge undertaking, and the stress levels can get quite high. I think they make it the easiest for the customer.

Hi Folks Thanks for all the replies. I have a quote from C&K that works out at £1000.00 for 4 cubic metres. The more metres the cheaper it gets understandably but, as I said, i'm not bringing anything bulky like sofas etc.. There is a customs clearance charge that is currently €180.00 plus the tax on goods depending on what paperwork is held? I am going to get there info pack that includes all the info needed so I will have a browse through that. They seem like a good honest company eager to keep their reputation and charges are competitively priced. Thanks again for all the input. I will post more as I learn so others can benefit.

Well if we needed to move, we would certainly use C&K again. Its loaded onto the lorry at your house and unloaded at your house or whatever the other end. All with the same driver keeping an eye on everything. They may not be the cheapest but its door to door without any problems.
cheers Keith
