talking to people over the holiday period has really put it into perspective why we dont have many tourists to the islands. Prices for drinks has gone through the roof in some bars i have heard numerous complaints from people especially on new years eve and new years day. How can a bar put their prices up to 5 euros a drink which is also for a half lager or another family told me they ot charged everything from 25 euros to 14 euros for the same round, it went down in price as the night went on. I got charged 9.50 for a small bottle of heineken and a g&t in my bar we would only charge 6 euros for that, needless to say i wont be going back there again. did anyone else get ripped off over the holiday period or any other time cos i think us bar owners should try to do something about it.

Sue, it´s called false economy.
You go into a bar get charged €5 for a beer and move on, or get charged €2 per drink and stay for 3 or 4 (€6-8) or even more. It´s a short sighted syndrome, I once had a beer, was told the price, laughed, to be told it´s the going rate, explained next door were cheaper and also I was resident. Offered a cheaper price, still more than next door and left. Needless to say this bar is now closed........
I´m not saying haggle, but look at prices, if its high then don´t pay! Simples.

I found your prices reasonable, infact very good, but others nearby wanted much more.

I did once go into a bar which served me a FREE beer, great, but then got charged €2.50 for the hire of the glass to keep it in!

Bang out of order that somewhere should charge residents one rate and tourists another. Thats actually illegal in the UK! Guy Ritchies pub in Mayfair got done for it couple of years back.

Foodie, go into a small pub with regulars in the UK, you´ll find the dual pricing isn´t advertised, but trust me, It´s there.

Do you shop at sainsbury´s or other supermarkets, Harrods is probably more your style  , the people who are in the shop the most get a discount. I mean shop workers, it´s not advertised........but

See what I mean? If you are a regular you tend to get a thank you. Buy a bus pass for a month and it´s cheaper overall than a weekly, go for 4 weeks a year on holiday or live there, it´s different.

Some bars offer a card giving 10% discount for the duration of the holiday, is this fair? It´s openly available.
Buy one get one free?......3 for the price of two.........Marketing ploys, they work.

Bored now......

I called into Tequilla bar on the strip about 18 months ago, the bar was fairly quiet so I thought I'd have a quick pint,
Asked the lad when I walked in how much it was for a local beer, he looked puzzled and after thinking about it said...."No more that 4€"

I didn't stay for the beer, :(

like Cymmon says if you get ripped off, you'll just drink up, move on and nevr go back, where as if you are getting fair prices, you are likely to have more and will also return

Sue hope to see you soon mate ! :D

Rubbish cymmon - how you can equate buying a 12 month season ticket versus nod and a wink for regulars at the bar is bizarre even by your freaky standards.

And how you can equate that to the 10% that sainsburys staff get off their groceries. You're not wired right sometimes! Legal V Illegal!

Yes I buy everything at Harrods. Feel better now?

I've worked in many small pubs and only one had a regulars "discount" it was a dodgy cash in hand place and was closed down 6 months after I left when the tax man closed in.
Anywhere that does that will get found out after all it is illegal and majority of land lords aren't going to risk their licence these days.

And what happens when a bar wants to charge its regulars the full price when times are hard?! You're just creating problems for yourself.

I don´t believe I did!

Ok foodie, lets give up the abuse, its getting boring now. Why have I freaky standards because you don´t agree.

Try LAW:

Canarian residents get discounts at attractions; ie tourist €8 at Timanfaya, €1.50 for residents. 50% discount for airfares within spain for residents. Discounts on ferries between the Islands, actually ADVERTISED!!!!

This is LAW!!!!!! In Spain. Tough if you don´t like it.

I go into a few bars in Sheffield, because I am reasonably regular and pleasant, I get a slight discount, perhaps if you tried to be nice and regular you may get a discount?????

Have you ever heard of marketing, as an "accountant" you should have. Give an incentive to frequent a bar and people normally return. Make them pay €5 and they won´t.

Simples, thank you for being here regularly, here´s a discount. Try a Nectar card, that gives discounts, as do Tesco and god knows how many more "privelege" cards, including airlines. Are these illegal? NO!

ie: If you prove you are there for the long term, then normally a company will give a discount.

Stop being a pratt and accept you can sometimes be wrong!

PS: My Harrods card gives me 5% discount, yours will be higher???? Or is it not legal?

Having just returned from Lanzarote to the snow :( We were amazed at how busy it was this time of year, granted it was not as busy as other new-years by all accounts, this was our 4th time in being in PDC in 2009.
To my sadness SOME of the bars and restaurants are still ripping people off, one pub/restaurant was charging €60.00 for christmas dinner....the same dinner on the 26th was €9.99.
Certain pubs overcharging for certain drinks and to our horror the management were argueing with each other in front of the customers, sadly it was our last vist to that establishment.

As to the arguement of Locals/regulars getting discounts in bars, maybe they do......so what !!!!!!!...if a regular is getting a slight discount because they choose to spend their money night after night in the same bars then surely that is up to the owners of the bars to provide a discount if they want to....at the end of the day it will be their profits affected !!!!

As ive said on this forum before we go to where we feel welcome and where the owners remember us and treat us like family.......people who are overcharging or providing a poor service on the island have no-one to blame for their establisments being quiet and i have no sympathy for them........In saying that the few bars we did frequent seemed to be doing great business.......and gook luck to them....they must be doing something right......

The same bar I refered to was handing out flyers for new year eve dinner with the price scratched out.....heard it was because of all the complaints over their christmas menu prices......thats what makes us TOURISTS angry.......needless to say they didnt have the same crowd on new years eve......people vote with their pockets.......

Thank you for the marketing lesson Cymmon

The point if you can get off your high horse is that those are legal and marketed whereas a nod and wink is not so - especially in the UK - all it takes is one disgruntled customer and bye bye bar licence. How you make the jump to nectar cards from that is very impressive.

In Lanza if you offer under the counter discounts to some and not to others is bound to put peoples noses out of joint, period. Its human nature - I would be hacked off.

And again the resicidencia is totally different - you are talking about an official arrangement V a casual nod.

If you visit Lanza as often as you say then you should have seen the odd nod and wink.
Perhaps you should take the hint and stay away? + nod

We were over in November and definately noticed a sharp increase in prices - especially in hotel bars and English / German owned bars. We stuck to the Cannarian bars and found the prices of beers, spirits and even coffees to be a hell of a lot lower. We were amazed at the difference in price.

We enjoyed our holiday more this time because apart from getting our food and drinks at a reasonalbe cost we also got to practice our Spanish, meet some Cannarians and experience more of the local commmunity.

Try Arrecife next time, just look for a hole in the wall and step inside. Some of the bars are superb. Would love to mention them all but then they´d all be full. Beers from €1, tapas from €1.50, spanish speaking (definately very little english) and pure Canarian culture.
