I'd like to ask a question. We visited Lanzarote a couple of years ago and will be returning next year. Our mum who's 76 would like to visit the Teguise market again. The problem we found going there last time was that the parking on the way into the town meant a horrendous climb up to the market area which was pretty hard on her. (She's in good nick for her age but that hill is asking a bit much...) Is there anywhere up the top and closer to the main market area where we could park next time? We noticed coaches up there, is there a public parking area?

Your help would be very much appreciated.

Loo

Hi Loo, If you continue up the hill (passing the car parks) you are pushed round to the right, follow this road until it pretty much doubles back on itself and you are on the same level as most of the market. There is a fair amount of on street parking here which I think would be ideal for you. This is where the disabled parking is which we use when my disabled grandfather is with us but there is non-disabled here too. There may be a better option but this is the best I can come up with.

Personally, I wouldn't bother. I like Teguise, but never on a Sunday! The Rubicon Marina markets on Wed and Sat are much the same and easy to get at, even for the less nimble. and the fruit and veg market in Mancha Blanca on sundays is brilliant if you want to see authentic Lanzaote, and get great produce. None of them charge for parking.

Good advice there Walker. (if you even noticed me  )
Having been to both i will always choose the Marina Rubicon Market every time.

Many thanks for your replies, folks. It's the mother's specific request to go there again - which we were all surprised about considering what it was like for her to get up and down that hill!

We'd visit the Rubicon Market anyway as we're staying again in Playa Blanca, but I think we all liked the buzz and variety in the big market (even though a lot of the same stallholders are there) and we can work it in with a visit after to Famara - so the tip about heading up to the top of the town is exactly what I was looking for.

Mwuh!

Oh, forgot to say - Walker, thanks for the tip about Mancha Blanca. We've done most of the obvious touristy things on our last trip and now we've got a good idea of the island would be keen to see other places and more of the 'real' Lanzarote, so I quite like the sound of the market at Mancha Blanca as well. If anyone has recommendations for any interesting not-so-touristy places to go, I'd be delighted to hear them. Two of us are thinking of trying guided walks, to get off the beaten track as it were!!

Looloo, there are guided walks from the Timanfaya visitor centre (not the park, the centre is about 3Km up the road towards Mancha Blanca. One, which runs a couple of times a week is across from near Yaiza to the coast, through the volcanic field. It's free, and the guides are superb, probably the best I've had anywhere, including the USA.

The walking group I'm in walk alternate sundays, in different "off the the beaten track places". When you know when you're here, get in touch.

The guided walks seem a bit better organised and accessible than the last time we visited, there are a couple we're certainly thinking about. I may well take you up on your offer to join your walking group - we'll be there the two middle weeks of September, so I daresay I can bring up the subject again nearer the time and see what you've got on. There's nothing like local knowledge!

Thanks again

Loo
