Just come back from Lanzarote. Stayed in Puerto Del Carmen. This is a warning to those of you who buy "food" off the beach sellers. This concerns a mid 40's guy who struggles with basic English. His pitch is "Mama mama". I watched whilst this guy sold ice creams etc to families, then cleaned the beach toilets. After that, he picked up his plastic "food" holder and carried on selling his Magnums, water and ice creams etc. Be warned!

Also, be aware of the beach bed money collectors. Each bed costs 4 euro's for the day. We paid 8, and gave him a 10 euro note. He will give you 1 euro change and pocket the other saying, "One for you, one for me".

I found PDC a bit of a rip off. Forty euro's for two average curries (in two different places), then in a quality upmarket resturant, 34 euro's for two great meals. Shop around. The other thing I found was that I get unhappy with this "Tipping" for everything. I bet it cost me around £70 for two weeks. I wish we would all say sod it and just give them the original cost only (oh well).

Hope this helps someone.

It would help others Touchline if you named the rip off joints and also praised and named the places where you feel you had value for money.
On the question of tipping . . . well I tip if the service is OK but if I feel cheated or that I've received poor service then I don't tip and I certainly don't return.

Keith.

I stayed in playa blanca for a week over Christmas and the thing what i thought was the biggest rip off was the price of drinks in the restaurants and cafe's - a hamburger 2 euro's then a fanta 3.75 euro's :?:

Yes just a total rip off -we tried 3 different restaurants along that strip - they put there menu on show, nice snacks at a reasonable price then whack you with 15 euros extra for 2 fantas (small) and 2 lagers (same price also)- this may sound like a good laugh but it spoilt our holiday a bit as we enjoy eating out( but i am not keen on getting ripped off). The second half or our holiday we bought lager @0.7 euro per 0.5 ltr and tuna prawns etc from the local shops and had loverly meals on the patio of our apartment for a 1/10 of the price of them rip off merchants.
We loved the island and enjoyed the hol overall.

all the best mike

We too paid €3.75 for a soft drink in PB a few days ago (at Mamma Rossa) - we were disgusted. Yes, it was a larger bottle than normal - but even so! We're used to paying between €1.50 & €2.50 in the bars and restaurants here... so were gobsmacked when we saw the bill. Fortunately the food was very reasonably priced.

Touchline,
Where exactly were these restaurants ??
I don’t think I’ve ever paid that price for a Fanta and in fact I’d say that most restaurants have quite reasonable drink prices.
Actually, by pure coincidence I have a bill in my pocket from El Veradero in the Old Town, a Cola light was €2 (£1.38) , a large beer €2.75 (£1.90) and a large water con gas €1.75 (£1.21) which I think is very reasonable in a restaurant – and a good one as well.
And So as Keith says, name and shame ‘em.
Not too surprised about the cost of curries though, nor the sun bed chappy, he’s just trying it on.
Ole
