Sarahjayne

a budget hunter here, I have tried Barbados many years ago but decided to come here to live. You have your opinion I have mine so when are you moving to Barbados? or is it just a pipe dream for a long haul budget traveller.

Bearing in mind Barbados is at it's most expensive to go to in the winter months I think you have a nerve coming on here and calling anyone a BUDGET HUNTER!!!

Ok....1) i agree in places to the untrained eye the island can look 'messy' but what do you expect from a volcanic island that is looking to improve itself? i mean the rocks have to go somewhere lol and if you had looked into the history of the Gaunches you would realise that a lot of these rock mounds were ancient burial sites.
2)Dead!!! i assume you mean the lack of people on the island. I agree with you on this one but thats in the main the cost of coming here. I suppose it helps keep the rif raf away.
3)PLEASE READ. Overlooking the emerald Caribbean Sea on one of the loveliest beaches in Barbados, this award winning resort sits on 2.5-acres amid lush tropical gardens edged by silken white sand beaches. Bougainvillea has 138 ocean, pool and garden view studios and suites, all with kitchens. Enjoy three swimming pools, one with swim-up bar, two restaurants – one fine dining! Other facilities include tennis court, fitness center, games room, Guest lounge, Kid’s Club, beauty salon, boutique and beach shop, and motorized & non-motorized watersports. The resort is within walking distance to St. Lawrence Gap for nightlife, shops and restaurants.
Hotel Address: Maxwell Coast Road, Christ Church
RECENT HOTEL REVIEW
Lackluster performance
Overall Score: 1.25

The calm waves as they lap up wistfully against my feet create what one could only describe as an abyss of pleasure. However if one was to delve deeper into this pool of joy one might find a few mistakes. On inspecting the toilet one might lay eyes upon what looks to be animal feecis covering the lavotory seat. Howeer with great dignity one will overlook this and ask the native butler at the door to kindly call for someone to clean the mess up. It is not until one o'clock the next day when an innocent child ,playing peacfully in the water and basking in the soft ambiance of his parents joy , stumbules obliviously upon a cock roach or two unfortunately this child is somewhat of the adventurous type and follows these cockroaches in order to find more cockroaches. Eventually this young child discovers a whole 'den of cockroaches' He then comes scrreaming back to his parents coverfed in the insects and bleeding from head to foot. It is at this point and on this note that any wise cus3tomer packs their bags and leaves. As a result of these happenings i am obligided to inform any fellow buyers that my stay here and i beleive anyone elses was some what lackluster in performance. This was cut and pasted from a holiday makers review.....sorry but i just had to. Oh and incidently the bins are emptied daily.
4)Spanish....arrogant??? sorry but i think youve got that totaly wrong....my god where are you from????? the european centre of arrogance.
5) Whilst recognising that it is a small island i would say that if you can be bothered to get off your backside there is more than enough to do to fill in a 2 week holiday.
6/7Costa Teguise??? or was that Costa Tequise.......that answers number 7.
8) Taxis are 50% cheaper than the UK....FACT!
9) Your dead right.
10) nothing like that in Barbados i'm sure.........Attacks and thefts are rare although persistent salesmen are likely to continually approach you. Visitors should exercise common sense precautions such as not exhibiting conspicuous signs of wealth and not to visit deserted beaches at night. Taken from another site that urges caution when visiting..... BARBADOS!

Excellent response Biffa!!!!

I´d love to reply again but being a stupid Brit I can´t string a decent sentence together!
All area´s have their good/bad points but overall this Island has MANY, MANY more good points.

BARBADOS ANYONE?
I can´t wait for the toilets, cockroach´s and Salesmen, and with the Island so lively I´ll have someone to talk too!!! Obviously though my two week stay will flash past, wish I could afford 5.......but being on a tight budget I doubt it!

I have had the experience of visiting many countries (Saudia Arabia, Bahrain, the Maldives,Cyprus, Yugoslavia, Italy, St Lucia, Thailand to name but a few) all have their plus and minus points BUT as a 'stupid Brit' I chose to live in Lanzarote, here are my answers to your gripes:
1. LOOKS LIKE A WASTE SITE
A. VOLCANIC ISLAND, DO YOUR RESEARCH DEAR
2. DEAD
A. QUIET, IF YOU WANTED SOME NIGHTLIFE YOU NEEDED TO LOOK AT THE RESORT YOU WERE VISITING PUERTO DEL CARMEN IS THE RESORT WITH THE NIGHT LIFE
3. COCKROACHES NESTLING AROUND BINS THAT HAVEN'T BEEN EMPTIED FOR WEEKS!!
A. BINS ARE EMPTIED DAILY, THE WEATHER IS WARMER HERE WHICH IS WHY COCKROACHES TEND TO BE MORE PREVALENT. AT LEAST THEY ARE NOT THE RATS WHICH ARE APPARENTLY NO FURTHER THAN A COUPLE OF FEET AWAY FROM ANYONE AND ANYWHERE IN THE UK
4. STUCK UP ARROGANT SPANISH PEOPLE
A. I THINK THE STUCK UP ARROGANT TAG COULD BE APPLIED TO THE WRITER OF THIS CRITIQUE
5. TINY NOTHING-TO-DO ISLAND
A. WHAT, I FILL MY DAYS OFF WITH LOVELY LAZY LUNCHES IN SOME OF THE LOVELIEST SEASIDE VILLAGES, TRIPS TO THE CRAFT MARKET IN HARIA,SNORKELLING ON PLAYA CHICA, CHILLING AT FAMARA TO NAME BUT A FEW
6. COSTA TEQUISE IS JUST A JOKE
A. UK HA HA
7. FULL OF STUPID BRITS
A. WE ARE NOT ALL STUPID THAT IS WHY A LOT OF US CHOOSE TO LIVE AND HOLIDAY HERE ONLY THOSE THAT CAN'T OPEN THEIR EYES PROPERLY AND TAKE THEIR TIME TO EXPLORE THEIR SURROUNDINGS BEFORE SLATING THEM ARE THE STUPID ONES
8. MONEY GRABBING TAXI FARES
A. PARDON? THE TAXIS HERE ARE VERY REASONABLE COMPARED TO UK
9. NUTTY DRIVERS
THIS ONE I WILL AGREE WITH 1 OUT OF 10 FOR EFFORT
10. ANNOYING AFRICAN SALESMAN!!! (WHO SELL CHEAP AND TACKY CRAP!!)
A. EXCUSE ME, WHERE DID YOU SAY YOU HAD BEEN? BARBADOS, NOW WITH MY EXPERIENCE OF THESE ISLANDS ON EVERY SINGLE BEACH YOU GO TO, INCLUDING IN THE RESORTS YOU ARE PESTERED BY ANNOYING CARRIBBEAN SALESMEN WHO ARE EXTREMELY PUSHY MORE SO THAN THE GUYS HERE

ANYWAY SARAH JAYNE AT LEAST WE KNOW THAT YOU WON'T BE GRACING THE ISLAND WITH YOUR PRESCENCE AGAIN SO AT LEAST THAT IS ONE LESS NEGATIVE PERSON HERE 8)

THANKS FOR SHOWING SUCH HIGH INTEREST IN MY POST..

sarajayne my views on your post..
1..sunny barbados has had intermittent rain since june.
2..most people i know over here are far from budget hunters, they have already travelled the world and decided to settle for the best..lanzarote.
3..you are really off track with the taxi drivers..they are extremely freindly and cheap in the main, dont confuse adding official surcharges as money grabbing.
4..unlike many places including the carribean, bins are emptied daily.
5..much less sales hassle than the carribean(and crime, rape, murder etc)

you knew your post would create interest but we just are laughing at you.
now go back to your ghetto and fill in your credit card application so you can go to dominican republic next year!

Oh Err !
Everyone’s entitled to their opinion I suppose but some expressed here I think are a bit severe, or at least overstated I think.
I’ll give my twopence (I’m on a budget lol):-

1. LOOKS LIKE A WASTE SITE
Not sure if you mean in town or out in the country. There are some grot spots in towns which could be dealt with I think, so some fair criticism there, but if it’s the volcanic scenery you refer to as a WASTE SITE, then it’s just unfortunate if you can’t see the rugged beauty in it.
2. DEAD
You mean nightlife ? Where I stay there’s a vast choice of bars, restaurants and clubs within 10 mins walk. Quiet and subtle, to loud and brash and lots in between. (in fact all 4 in Spenders bar, depending who’s behind the bar lol – BTW quiet and subtle is Natalie, I’ll leave it to you to work out the rest)
3. COCKROACHES NESTLING AROUND BINS THAT HAVEN'T BEEN EMPTIED FOR WEEKS!!
As stated above bins are emptied daily, but there still are overflowing bins in some places, this is a fair criticism and something which annoys me also. Whether that means there’s more cockroaches I don’t know.
4. STUCK UP ARROGANT SPANISH PEOPLE
Sorry, do you not see the irony of your statement.
5. TINY NOTHING-TO-DO ISLAND
See the main pages of this site for the list of things to do. I can’t believe you can have traveled the island.
6. COSTA TEQUISE IS JUST A JOKE
Can’t really comment, not been for 15 years.
7. FULL OF STUPID BRITS
Irony once again ? And this one annoys me as well ! Yes, the Brits tend to like a good drink on hols and sometimes that’s a little unsightly, but if anyone apologises for bumping into you, or stands aside as you walk by or holds a door for you, or helps with a sunbed etc then pound to a penny they’ll be Brits. It’s just that some people like to see themselves above others.
8. MONEY GRABBING TAXI FARES
Sorry lost me there ?
9. NUTTY DRIVERS
Yes maybe.
10. ANNOYING AFRICAN SALESMAN!!! (WHO SELL CHEAP AND TACKY CRAP!!)
I’ve actually always found these chaps very polite and usually quite humorous as well, maybe you bring out the worst in people, or maybe you just don’t like poor people ?

So, to recap :
You went to a peaceful small volcanic Spanish Island, just off Africa which is popular with British tourists and you don’t like small or quiet or volcanoes or Spanish or Brits or Africans ?
Well you were never going to like Lanzarote really were you.
Sorry SarahJane, there's genuine criticisms to be made about Lanzarfote, but your comments betray that your looking down your nose at people.

And one final word, you missed out one :-
11) Too many Geordies ! ;)

Cheers - Ole

Sarajayne,
So are you saying that the morale of the story is to leave Barbados to the 'Highflyers'? and the 'Budget Hunters' to continue to enjoy:- the island, respect the spanish, respect the landscape, Art and friendly British xpats? Oh an by the way I am one of those Budjet hunters you refer to, who is currently looking to buy an apartment on the island.
Very important word RESPECT.

GEOFF
