Tourist shopping and Residents supermarket shopping is totally different. Most tourists will eat out 90% of the time and don’t have to buy all the non-food items at all. So if we get stitched up for a pack of bacon we can live with it whilst we’re on hols, not the same if it’s you’re whole cost of living. My shopping basket is likely to be pop, croissants, bread, cheese, crisps, not exactly a weekly shop. If we want a bigger shop, we’ll drive up to Tias, but it took us years to find that out, your first time visitor isn’t going to stumble across that.
Tourists and Residents alike, we all like a good moan about prices though.
BTW, the most expensive Supermarket I know is the one next to Spanish Inn – I guess you pay extra for front-line supermarket shopping, getting ripped off for bacon but with a sea view ! - best avoided, the one at bottom of Cardiac hill is better and cheaper (still expensive though), and I suspect has a better sea view lol.

From lanzarote news

A crowd of between 1000 and 1500 people marched between Calle Real and the Parque Islas Canarias in Arrecife on Saturday (2 February) to protest against the high Supermarket Prices in Lanzarote.

Lanzarote has some of the highest Supermarket prices in Spain, the causes of which are blamed on several factors, principally the duopoly of Hiperdino and Supermercado Marcial, a law which prevents large 'hard discount' stores from opening on the Island, allegations of land-banking by the large players and the current status of Arrecife port.

The protest was organised by Leticia Padilla and her husband, Fernando Marcet, who are in the process of creating a Consumer's Association in Lanzarote.

me and my boyfrind completely agree that the prices in the tourist supermarkets (namely Netto) are astronomical. We dont own a car so we hire 1 once a month to do a big shop outside of Costa Teguise. But day day to we have no choice but to use Spar (which isnt TOO bad) and Netto. We have spoken to so many people on holiday who think it is expensive to buy food in the supermarkets compared to other Canary Islands. We have discussed this between us and surely in some cases it would affect whether the tourist returns?! Also what we have noticed happens a heck of a lot particularly in Spar, is that the price will missing from the cheapest option. Eg, there'll be 4 different brands of washing up liquid and the price will be on 3 and 1 wont have a price. We always risk it and 9 times out of 10 when you get to the till it is the cheapest 1. Has anyone else noticed this sly behaviour going on?!! :?

Try Hiperdino in Deiland shopping centre, Playa Honda. I always find the prices reasonable. There is another shop just past the bus station in Arrecife too.

I use Hiperdino in Playa Blanca when I'm overe there, can't really complain compared to the Netto's and Spars.
