Cy is right with his comment, the €4 comes in by dividing the hours from the MONTHLY wage you could be paid.
Your expectations are more likely but be surprised if you get a contract of employment.

Most places in Playa Blanca are €6.50 and above but do check that you get a contract because falling over at work in a foreign country without a contract is not a good position to be in!

if its 6 euros and hour x 40 hrs that 240 a week...times 4 thats 960e a month.
thats not bad especially if 2 ppl are renting an apartment and both getting around teh same money??

Bob
your figures are right but let me tell you it is dead here m8 and bars/cafes/restaurants are starting to lay people off and not taking them back on.

Its not really rocket science - bar staff get minimum wage (or below) in virtually every country that bars exist and are the first to be kicked out when times get tough. precarious existence.

hi there i mentioned to overhere in a pm that i was in pdc this time last year and it was quite busy , it was my first time over but my mrs 10000th time or something and she says it was quite good for this time of year.
i understand the lowest paid get laid off first and that they will be near minimum wage. im just trying to get a very good idea what happens before we finally take the plunge.
if my figures are right and if we can keep a job then we should be all right.
ps: last question....tips...do the bar managers etc share them out to staff ok here??? and how much can a bar/cafe person make in tips in a week???
thanks for all the info ppl

Is it dead??
was asked in a text message if PDC had been evacuated last night.
The holiday companies are fighting a losing battle by keeping their prices HIGH people just aren't booking holidays.
As for tips most places let the staff keep the tips and divide them out at the weekends or monthly.
Not to pee on your bonfire Bob but I would hold on to what you've got for the time being before making the move.
Cy is in the process of looking to go back in January after 2 years, he will no doubt add his thoughts to this.

With reference to tour operators John, its Just pure greed. They put the prices up at Christmas and Half terms. They couldnt care less about the families trying to give a decent holiday to the kids. They will learn the hard way like they always do, there days are numbered with more people booking independantly. Its only a matter of time.

Geoff
unless there are more flights from easyjet, jet2 etc then the tour ops hold all the cards for people to get here, do they not?

As Overhere says, the Island is slowing down even after maybe 3-4 years. Its very quiet, the main avenida is all closed and dug up. I work for a small bar that opened recently on the front. Great until the roadworks........
Now lucky to get 3 3hr duties in a week. Hopefully that will change asap but just in case I am looking at the negative idea of a return to the UK for a year or so, then a return when (hopefully) the tourism builds up again. Even my tours have suffered badly this year.
Certain tour companies have also seriously cut back, closed or heavily discounted prices causing more cash flow problems for themselves. Franyasmarbus got a bad name so have tried the ploy of changing their name to Bus leader...... more costs.
The Island is fantastic, but it needs tourism to survive. The present worldwide credit crunch is worldwide.
