The Canary Islands, because of the trade winds, were the historic stopover point for transatlantic voyages - Columbus himself stopped off in The Canary Islands on his way to discovering America.
Today, many sailors stop off in Puerto Calero in Lanzarote while taking the trip of a lifetime to South America or around the World. The waters around the island offer excellent sailing conditions with plenty to see: Flying Fish, Turtles, Dolphins and Whales as well as the offshore Islands of La Graciosa (straight out of a Pirate Novel), Alegranza, Montana Clara and Isla Lobos.
Even if you have no sailing experience, you can get a taste of what it's all about (and a little luxury too) by chartering a Yacht or taking a Catamaran excursion.
