I am wondering if we can claim social welfare in lanzarote while we are looking for work as we are moving there next year and taking a years career break from work

     Well thats the best laugh on here for a long time....there is NO social welfare AT ALL in Spain.....even for the Spanish,,,,,no ´´dole´´... no ´´council houses´´... no ´´handouts ´´ of any description whatsoever....sorry but if you are looking for work then you need enough money to support yourself whilst you do so.If you have worked in Spain for over 24 months then you MAY be entitled to ´´paro´´ which is a Govt. payment of two thirds of your previous salary rate for two thirds of the time you paid into the Social Security system....but that means you must have had a recognised full contract ( rare as hens teeth) here and have been laid off or finished through no fault of your own.In over 10 years here never actually heard of an ´´extranjero´´ (foreigner )getting it though.

I like Spanish system a lot. How did Spain get into so much debt then if there's no welfare state?

Spain has 8,122 Municipal councils - add to that numerous other layers of government (Cabildos, Autonomous Communities etc.) and you soon have an expensive state. Spain also seemingly does everything it can to discourage people from working for themselves, hence the high unemployment.

Also, social welfare payments aren't as bad for a country as people would like to think - dole payments are generally recycled back into the local economy. It's productivity numbers that really suffer from high unemployment.

Spain just like almost every other country in the world creates it's currency by borrowing through a 'central bank'/Rothschild owned . That money then has to be paid back and with interest. Because of the size of these 'loans' these days, they are paid back forever. So a growing percentage of Spains wealth is already accounted for before the government even gets' it's hands on it.
