To risk getting boring with this subject, firstly I did not and never would carry large sums of money abroad or here for that matter, and I was in the market for a new camera or I would have not stopped at the shop in the first place. As for John Bs comments for blaming everyone but myself for this is that say he was walking down a street and trod in some dog mess who would he blame? himself for walking down a road where people walk their dogs, or the dog owners for letting their dogs foul in the street, or the councils that know that this happens and do nothing about it....I doubt very much he would blame just himself.

Using your analogy, I would blame myself, because I know that there is likely to be dog mess on the streets, so I take care not to step in it. Sometimes I fail, and would curse. I absolutely despise people who let their dogs foul, but it isn't a suprise that they do, and I don't blame the dog. As has been said twice on this thread, caveat emptor.

If you were in the market for a new camera, had you done any research in UK? Did you come to the Canary Islands with an intent to get a bargain without knowing what constituted a bargain?

Look, although I don't want to start an arguement, I can't help thinking you now realise you were foolish, but you are lashing out at the dog. Why not drop it?

I'm sorry John b but I will not let it drop, and I was not foolish but naive and uninformed. I am afraid its folks like you that actually live over there and know the score yet keep quiet about it. I have a friend that has recently moved to Fuerterventura and they tell me that they are going to lobby the Canary island trading standards into doing something about it, lets face it they need our money even more now and if they keep sticking two fingers up to all the holiday makers complaints they do not deserve the business, and if you bother to read all the blogs its not just the Brits that get caught out. I sell houses in the UK and if I miss described a property like they do their goods I would be in trouble.

Davyboy, I know where youre coming from, it's rotten to be done like that and the so called electronics shops are a blight on the lanzarote landscape. However, you mentioned John b as " keeping quiet about it " , to be fair, had you visited this or another lanzarote forum ( there are several ) before the purchase, I'm sure that this predicament would not have arisen as you'd have seen many many threads warning people about these shops. So I think it's a bit unfair blaming John b or anyone else in that regard. What is he or anyone else to do? Hand out flyers as you disembark from the ferry in PB ? You got caught in what is the worst scam on the islands. I often wonder how do these places make a living as most people avoid them like the proverbial plague. I think your point has been made, move on.

I would hate to see that incident sour ones view of lanzarote. It is a wonderful place to visit, with a lot to offer the holidaymaker. These people do not seem to get the message that they are damaging the islands image. Whether anything will ever be done about it, well, perhaps Mañana !

Incidentally, on a lighter note, I have the honour of being refused a purchase on an electronics shop in PdC ! Yep, the guy in the shop in the end refused to sell to me ! It's a long story and for another day but sometimes the little guy wins !

Pre the internet the camera shops did have their uses....for specialist buyers. As there is no VAT in the canaries if you knew what you wanted then you could make a good saving, though you would have no warranty.

Now you can get the same kit or better that is on sale in the indian shop in Lanza for less in the UK if you use the better internet price comparison sites.

I think John is being a little on the harsh side and am assuming Davyboy is feeling a tad stupid that he got railroaded into a transaction he had no interest in.

My original points were generic - why do tourist do things on holiday they would never consider at home though....the 2 examples I used were the 2 most common in lanza.

I'm puzzled now, I've had a stroll from the Playa Blanca church to the harbour along the pedestrianised street, and back along the prom to Funde Grube, and I couldn't see a shop called Kapish Electronics anywhere. It must be well hidden. The camera shops are all called by European names such as Satellite Electronics.

The only one I could see on Avenida Papagayo is Royal Electronics on the corner by the roundabout and opposite the taxi rank. Is that it?

Can't remember now but I would if I saw it, being 1000 miles away doesn't help. I have their trading number on the receipt. Too late now to do anything but I have emailed what I believe is their trading standards office but it's like all the others caught out say, they do not give a shite!

Just came across this when looking for details of Trading Standards. I was also caught with this scamming lot. I went back the day after as I had not been given a battery charger and was told that I would have to buy one. or just use a PC link up. After arguing and threatening to go to the Police and contact Canon cameras I was given all that I should have been given in the first place. The total that I paid was very close to what I would have paid in the UK.
Yes I know I was stupid but was too trusting - however I am more careful now.
