Hi,

I am putting the feelers out to try and build a picture of the career opportunities in Lanzarote.

My family and I are beginning to make moves to relocate to the island. We have made numerous visits now and are sure that it holds a great future for us all. We are also entering the mad world of learning the language.

Anyhow, my background is engineering based. I was trained (HND in general engineering) and served in the Royal Navy for around 7 years. On leaving the RN, I have worked as a service engineer in a few different engineering disciplines, including air conditioning, diesel generators and compressed air. For a period of 3 years I held a position as a Senior Engineer for a national telecommunications company, responsible for the M&E infrastructure of their large technical switch sites, one of these areas being air-con (VRV, Split, Multi split and a few chiller systems). I was also a Technical Service Manager for an air conditioning company.

I currently hold an Area Mangers position for a diesel driven pump/generator supplier.

My preference would be to continue in an engineering discipline rather than to rely on the tourisms industry.

Would anyone know how I would stand on the island with my level of experience? Is this type of work actually available?

Thanks,

Lee.

Lee,
Ok. Here's the reality. There's a very small number of specialist companies on lanzarote. The key to getting a job with these will be to speak fluent Spanish and also to be proactive. Also bear in mind that unfortunately the job situation over here is worse than in most of the UK.
Good luck

Hello Jack! :)

Welcome to the site... I agree with what 71 said in regards to learning spanish. It's possibly not all doom and gloom either, due to your knowledge of air conditioning, power generation etc..you could try and get onboard with the service companies that look after the larger hotels on the island.

Good luck with the move and hope you find what you're looking for.

Guys,

Thanks for the replies.

Oh no, Bootnecks get everywhere !!! Have you been out there for long?

Great idea for the hotel maintenance side of things. I have had a hunt around but can't find a company name to try and contact. I don't suppose you would know who has the major hold on this line of work?

I may send mails to the hotels themselves to see if they can shed any light.

Cheers,

Lee

also be aware everyone will expect you to already be living on the island and you will be very lucky to recieve any email replies.
you will almost certainly need fluent spanish which takes around 250 hours on average.
important you realise what you are up against at the outset..many people are relocating back to the uk because of the recession here.

Hi Trev,

Thanks for the advice.

I am learning the language now and I do understand that I would need to be living on the island before I could seriously look for employment, as word of mouth seems to be very important.

I am trying to get a feel for how things tend to work with people and the job market.

I do intend to do a good 12 months research before I commit to anything.

I appreciate that it is a very different life style, hence all of the questions. I don't want to commit the family to a "no-hope" adventure. The more info I can get from people, like yourself, the better.

If you would know of any avenues that I could explore, it really would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Lee.

Jazalakallahu Khair Abdul Mujeeb, this is a website for a Spanish Island off the West coast of Africa, nothing to do with Australia.
